We provide a full-contact Karate based system of self defence. Classes focus on a variety of attacks – punches, kicks, elbows and knees as well as joint locks and some throws. Students train in pairs, on pads and perform solo drills in preparation for light sparring.
The literal translation of Zanshin is the “mind with no remainder”. It is the philosophy of being completely immersed and focused on the task at hand without stress. Extending this definition further, it is to live intentionally, without falling prey to mental distractions.
Zanshin is commonly used in martial arts to refer to a state of relaxed alertness and fighting spirit. This may manifest in the form of being aware of your surroundings without paranoia and being ready to take action should the time come.
It can be developed by focusing on the process, not the goal. In our class, we train technique with a high attention to detail at every stage of the process – from solo drills to partnered work. In doing so, students can transition to sparring with an instinctual understanding of the fundamentals.
Students will then learn to stay relaxed and alert when sparring in order to remain calm when attacked and ready to strike when the opportunity arises. With consistent practice, this mindset can be taken outside of class to avoid danger, yet be prepared should it arise.
We train in sport clothes (no gi). Please wear loose fitting clothes and bring water bottle to class.
Each student receives tailored training and feedback throughout the class as we train in groups of under 15 per class.
The class begins with 10-15 minutes of cardio drills and warm-ups. We may move on to martial arts focused strength and conditioning exercises for 30-45 minutes. With consistency, you will find your body becomes more capable of performing explosive and complex techniques.
Next, the instructor will demonstrate and break down technique. Students will perform a series of solo and partner drills for 60-90 minutes. The instructor will go around providing help and feedback to each student.
Provided students have trained long enough to display good control and understanding of basic techniques, we may spar at the end of class to practice what we’ve learned in a live environment.
Finally, we will perform cool-down stretches and may even go out for a social afterwards!

Sparring is a way to develop technique in a dynamic environment, rather than to beat your opponent. Strikes are thrown with limited power and it is a way for you to explore all the techniques we learn in class. Sparring is always performed under instructor supervision.
Whilst it may seem intimidating at first, you will learn to face your fears in a healthy and safe environment. We aim to make martial arts accessible for everyone, so you are welcome to opt out until you feel more confident.
Students aged 13 and over are allowed to spar with adults provided they show good technique and control in prior classes. All students, regardless of age must show good emotional control and humility. The instructor will decide when students are ready for sparring. It usually takes several months before new students are ready for no-contact / light sparring.
Students must wear gloves and a gum shield bought through the club. This is to ensure all students use the same equipment.
